Framing Optimism

Framing Optimism
Visual Communication at Herron School of Art and Design
This project was initiated by the Visual Communication faculty at Herron School of Art + Design. Two other students and I were asked to help create this exhibit entirely, from concept to production. With the help of only one main faculty member throughout the process we carried out this project on our own.

HOW WE FRAMED THE EXHIBIT
Visual Communication students at Herron School of Art + Design develop skills and methods to serve a broad range of causes by finding opportunities instead of problems. Working with community partners, students get to see first-hand how their ideas create positive change. This exhibit looks at undergraduate student work and the processes they engage in during their time at Herron School of Art and Design. We walked viewers through five main concepts of our visual communication program. All of these concepts were centered around how we, as designers can be optimistic. We discussed how designers must have a passion for their work, and how that passion can translate into creating positive change. We also discussed the problem solving process and how we use this process to find opportunities in projects that we couldn't otherwise see. We displayed the outcomes of each year of the visual communication program and how they scaffold, creating designers that have many transferable skills. The final part of the exhibit discussed how a designer has the responsibility to think about what he or she is contributing to the world. This last area asked viewers to participate by sharing their views on certain topics.
